At CraftPixie, we like to design simple and quirky overlay mosaic crochet patterns. Our goal is to make this crochet method easy to follow and to inspire makers to experiment with our patterns. We also aim to create a space where people can share ideas. We have therefore developed an online design process to facilitate this.

The CraftPixie Design Process uses a suite of purchasable patterns, called MOTIFs, that fit together and can be mixed and matched. The CraftPixie Process turns design on its head. We do not tell the crocheter what to make, we provide the design and the tools to allow them to make whatever they like using our patterns.

All CraftPixie MOTIF patterns include an overlay mosaic crochet chart, written stitch sequences, useful links, and a technical annex with information on abbreviations, stitch creation and placement, some useful links, and some hints and tips. We also provide a blank MOTIF LAYOUT CHART and associated MOTIF images to help you design your project (more below).

The MOTIFs are 24 stitches wide by 24 rows high, so they can be arranged like a patchwork to create any design. They are simple, with no special stitches, so they are suitable for a beginner in this technique.

Confident designers will be able to use the blank MOTIF LAYOUT CHART included in the pattern, or other tools, to visualize their designs.

For other less confident makers, there is a link in each pattern to a specific tutorial explaining how to use the MOTIF LAYOUT CHARTS when designing. We also have our PROJECTS gallery showing pre-designed projects that you can view. These can be used with any Craft Pixie MOTIF pattern. Each project page has summary information including the starting chain, approximate size and brief additional notes. These will be added to as new MOTIF patterns are released.
